US to buy 3,000 MT PHL bananas for Dec.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is allowing about 3,000 metric tons of bananas from the Philippines for delivery in December, according to a Bureau of Plant Industry official. "The workplan has been approved,” Plant Bureau director Clarito Barron said in an interview on Monday. “US Ambassador [Harry] Thomas expressed satisfaction on the preparations when he visited the Dole [Phils.] plant a few weeks ago, Barron said. Philippine banana growers and traders were excited by the prospect of selling to US market, the Plant Bureau official noted. "This is a dream come true for most of our farmers who have been fighting for the entry of our bananas to the US in more than a decade now," he said. Washington is now reviewing a final workplan for US Trust territories, including Guam and The Marianas Islands, Barron said, indicating these are the next buyers of Philippine Cavendish. — VS, GMA News
